It's the international market that matters. I agree with your statement though about domestic gross, however when GWTW and SW were in theaters, there were not nearly the amount of movies in theatres to choose from nor the variety of entertainment options for people to choose from. Pirating wasn't a huge market yet and people weren't watching these films online illegally. Just consider that when you make those claims that GWTW and Star Wars made sooo much money. They are a product of the times, much like Avatar.

Also when GWTW was in theaters movie tickets were like 20 cents. The amount of people that saw GWTW in theaters is absolutely incredible.
