Don't kid yourself. Those assistants still do Joe's bidding. He may give them the reins during the game, but if he wants something done, it gets done.
He still gets very involved in the gameplan and is a lot more active in practice than people think.
Yes, he'll be 83 by the time we play, but the guy is a freak of nature. He continues on because he enjoys it. And the things he enjoys revolve around his involvement with the kids. With his new hip, he's no longer in pain and is enjoying himself more than he has since before his leg was broken on the sidelines against Wisconsin in 2006.
Don't judge a coach by whether or not he wears a headset. Joe never has and his record speaks for itself.
