I'm as much as a movie fan as anyone, but I don't think it's worth it unless you already have an HDTV. And even then, I wouldn't repurchase my entire movie collection, only rent movies and buy the absolutely necessary to own titles.
I'm waiting it out until the industry decides on physical media or not.

yeah, it's really a timing thing. it's inevitable that disc media will go the way of betamax. i do HD video production as a hobby (for now), and there are only so many ways to share (with clients, family, etc) HD content. A standard DVD can hold a few minutes of 1080 content, but can only be played on computers. I can burn blu ray discs, but so few people have blu ray players that it's hardly worth fooling with. sites like exposure room now have iphone apps and are becoming industry standard.
i know this is a different issue from commercial movies, but they are inter-related. The reason producers like me aren't sold on BR is because no one thinks the commercial side is going to make it in the long run (or even mid-run).
on demand, streaming content is going to take over completely before too long.
there is also concern about licensing. i haven't looked into that much but here's a year-old article i found: LINK
"having said that" (see Curb), if you enjoy HD movies and have netflix (you can do BR for small fee), then go for it because it isn't that expensive.
