Worth replacing my old DVD player?

Yes, especially if you have a good TV and watch a lot of movies at home.
ETA: However, if I were you and was looking to get a blu-ray player, I would heavily consider a PS3 first.

Only if you can watch them on a HD TV.

If you have a good surround sound system too.

I considered that, but I really don't want to start buying video games again.
Is the PS3 a viable alternative to the Wii for little kids?
Thanks for all the replies. I wanted to hear that it wasn't worth it.

Any other suggestions on a good one besides PS3? Have been looking to buy one as a Christmas gift and was just wondering which ones were better

You can probably find it cheaper than Crutchfield, but that is a really nice player if you are not interested in gaming

Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p is probably the best rated Blu-Ray player on Amazon for under $250. You can get the Panasonic DMP-BD60 for under $150, which is probably the best rated player in its price range.

does a bear shite in the woods??? of course its worth it.
I think the ps3 option is still the best bang for your buck esp if you have kids into video games

That is way too technical for the average user.

Anyone know anything about the LG BD390?

I'm as much as a movie fan as anyone, but I don't think it's worth it unless you already have an HDTV. And even then, I wouldn't repurchase my entire movie collection, only rent movies and buy the absolutely necessary to own titles.
I'm waiting it out until the industry decides on physical media or not.

yeah, it's really a timing thing. it's inevitable that disc media will go the way of betamax. i do HD video production as a hobby (for now), and there are only so many ways to share (with clients, family, etc) HD content. A standard DVD can hold a few minutes of 1080 content, but can only be played on computers. I can burn blu ray discs, but so few people have blu ray players that it's hardly worth fooling with. sites like exposure room now have iphone apps and are becoming industry standard.
i know this is a different issue from commercial movies, but they are inter-related. The reason producers like me aren't sold on BR is because no one thinks the commercial side is going to make it in the long run (or even mid-run).
on demand, streaming content is going to take over completely before too long.
there is also concern about licensing. i haven't looked into that much but here's a year-old article i found: LINK
"having said that" (see Curb), if you enjoy HD movies and have netflix (you can do BR for small fee), then go for it because it isn't that expensive.
