Miles has had one losing season too, and that was his first year at OKState, and two years later they were 9-4. except Miles did it in the big 12, at a program that was 45-70 with one winning season in the 12 years before he got there.
I'm not comparing or contrasting Miles to Kelly, I'm talking about Kelly exclusively. But since you brought it up, Central Mich was 33-63 in the 9 years prior to Kelly getting there so it's safe to say they each went into schools who sucked. Miles also had a T Boone Pickens backed athletic dept.

it didn't go so well the last time we fell in love with TCU's head coach ..

Before my time, what happened?

when we fired hallman, pat sullivan (the former QB from auburn) was the media darling and the front runner for this job in 1995 ... joe dean basically gave him the job but he couldn't get out of his buyout at TCU and they drew the line ... dean moved on to dinardo ... the next season sullivan returns to TCU and suprise, surprise .. his players just basically said "frick you" and laid down for him for an entire season ..

Brian Kelly will be flat out dangerous at ND. They've got some talent there, and he'll exploit what he's got. Not only that, his teams have historically done quite well on the defensive side of the ball. He's the whole package.

Kelly to ND....is equal to....Saban to Bama. Awaken the sleeping giant. (i.e. ND has a softer, Big 10 like schedule and will be in the BCS picture on a regular basis with Kelly at the helm).

LSU's fans pull the "RP" excuse at will to excuse miles, but they don't respect a coach who can win with a backup QB?
Is he winning with a backup FRESHMAN QB. You will twist anything to fit your agenda. We had to play freshman QB's last year. We all know you are in love with BK. He is not coming to LSU so give it up.

The Les Miles Brand is suffering big time. Only winning a NC will erase this and they will take another year. I really don't like this crap hanging over our school/coaches head.

if the SEC has a bunch of underachievers then how do you know that florida and bama are great teams. they beat underachievers, they might just be good, fundamentally solid teams.

I'm really an innocent bystander here (a semi-LSU fan via my wife, who is a hard-core fan); but how in the world can you degrade Kelly for his statement about Miles? I'm not really sure how anyone can defend Miles after last weekend. If Vince Lombardi jumped from his grave and said Miles made one of the greatest coaching gaffes in college football history (which coincidentally is what EVERYONE outside the State of LA - including Mile's peers - are saying or inferring) some of you would claim, "the NFL was week in that day, and until Lombardi coaches in the SEC, he should just STFU!" Utterly ridiculous.

And by the way, who do you think would win in a matchup this year, LSU or Cincinnatti? Better yet, who do you think would've won that matchup last year? Big East or not, a vast majority would not put their money on LSU.

Whether or not Miles is completely at fault for what transpired at Ole Miss, his reputation among college football fans, critics, recruits, and his peers is little more than scorched earth now. That's hardly just my opinion.

Of course, you can choose to still support Miles, but don't expect most others to meet you even half-way. And you shouldn't degrade those (including other D1 coaches ACTUALLY IN BCS CONTENTION) that don't agree with you. I mean sure, the whole world might be wrong, or it may just be you... who knows?

Does anyone know what the supposed skeletons in the closet are for Kelly?

People keep implying he has something in his history that has held him back from getting a better job in the past but specifics are completely absent best I can tell

So I'm trying to figure out whether Kelly is really nearly as good as his stock right now and I'm just not sure

He's done well at Cincinnati but lost 3 games the prior two years. He's won two of three bowl games there best I can tell but two of those were close games against western michigan and southern mississippi... the loss was a 20-7 loss to va tech

That's fine but not grounds to view him as can't miss I think. He did well but not unbelieveably so at Central Michigan (going 4-7, then 6-5, then 9-4 before jumping to Cincinnati). His prior head coaching experience was at Grand Valley state University. His record there was 118-35-2 and he won 5 conference titles and made the playoffs six times but never won it all

This is fine but does not compare certainly to the record someone else who started out at a lower coaching level and worked his way up (Jim Tressel)... Tressell won national championships at Youngstown State before moving up to OSU and winning a NC there

He's a defensive guy. I'm not sure if he's an offensive genius or not.

Kelly won it all in 2002 AND 2003.

ETA: Team also won it again in 2005 and 2006. So he obviously knows what kind of players to recruit...

hmm, I'm wrong... reading elsewhere that he won 2 national championships

That is much better

Of course it remains to be seen whether he is the next Jim Tressell or Joe Glenn

yeah, there's no way to tell really. he's got a better resume at this point than tres did when hired at OSU.

people can talk about how "he hasn't proven anything in a major conference" all day long, but neither did urban meyer (unless you consider wiping the floor with a shite pittsburgh team impressive).

it's all in their makeup.
