Getting a job offshore as a deckhand with no experience...

What certifications/cards/physicals/ect would one have to get, and how would one go about getting them?

I have a friend that recently moved back to LA and needs a job. He's an LSU grad and Iraq vet, so he's not a bum, just hard on his luck with a preggers wife.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Gotta break it down a little more than that for me brah.

I know these are the requirements, but I dont know what the cards mean or how to obtain them:

Minimum Requirements

must possess a valid USCG merchant mariner's document (z-card) with minimum endorsement of OS, Wiper, SD (FH)
valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card)
due to high volume of applicants, 6 months prior vessel experience is preferred but not required
high school diploma preferred but not required
must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check and Safe Gulf class

subject to random drug screening

must be capable of working offshore in harsh weather environments for periods of 3 to 6 weeks

must have reliable transportation to and from work for crew changes

not sure about this (most likely basic), most licenses regard to tonnage and offshore distances they will travel.

valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card)

he has to go to local TWIC place, apply (can't be a felon basically) pay around $100 or the company pays for it, and wait...can be a pain in the arse waiting, not as long/bad as when they immediately demanded TWIC cards for everyone.

website says, 3 to 4 weeks.. that is about how long it took for mine, might have gotten it a little quicker, can't remember.

I recently lost my wallet, lost my twic, and now they are sending a new one to the office..

Edit: Where is this person living? (to find his closest TWIC office)

TWIC

He just moved to Denham Springs from out of state.

I understand google wouldnt hurt, just figured it could be explained by someone more concisely with some inside info on a louisiana based msg board...

wasn't trying to be mean, i understand...i edited it out after realizing i sounded like a dick.. sorry..

Wherever this person will be, he will be able to find the local Twic office by calling or just looking it up on the website..

the process of getting the card is pretty painless unless he is a felon and the wait..

TWIC Card.

This is a must if anyone is going to work in industry in south Louisiana or Texas.

It stands for Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) It is issued by the TSA and enforced by the Coast Guard.

If I were him, I'd drive around Lafayette, New Iberia, maybe Port Fouchon, and apply at every place I saw. Also do some research on oil/transport/rigging companies in those areas and map out where they are. If he's lucky he'll get an interview with another veteran and be in like flint. A lot of companies will pay for training too.

Roughneck's are getting something like $19 an hour right now.
