Never seen it, probably but Man vs. Drugs? which is really Man vs. his Creation. I assume and I am kidding, btw because I have never seen it.

Those are the general constructs for narrative (and mythic stories)

Sleep may be a movie, but it may not be a narrative.

The Matrix is hardly original and the concept has been done before. Computer Simulated Realities was not a new concept that the Wakowski Bros. came up with, and the Chosen One arc has been done for a long, long time before the Matrix.

It wasn't even the only movie dealing with virtual realities that came out in the late late 90s. The Thirteenth Floor(1999), Dark City (1998) and eXistenZ (1999) had similar themes.

STAR WARS plot came from HIDDEN FORTRESS. THX1138 is Lucas' most original film.

PSYCHO was a very original film for its time. Main character is killed off half way through the film.

2001 is actually a highly original movie. It was made before the novel was, and there seem to be very few outside influences to it.

Oldboy was based on a book, so I don't know if that counts.

Both Pi and Being John Malkovich were pretty damn original.

2001 is based on Arthur C. Clarke's short story "The Sentinel." But is much different.

You could add Vanilla Sky to that as well even though I don't remember what year it came out?

Just in recent years:

Pan's Labyrnith

Slumdog Millionaire (sure, the whole rising up from poverty thing is unoriginal, but the format in which the story is told was original)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

"Forrest Gump" was a variation on Woody Allen's "Zelig".

Well then that one then

And I'm sticking by Identity unless someone else knows of a similar film to this one that I never heard of.
