Real life conversation with Credit Card Girl

I'm one of those guys who gets the bill in the mail, writes out the check immediately and mails it back the next day.
I've been doing this with Visa, now Chase for 30 years. I've never had to pay a penny in interest because I always pay the total amount at the end of the month.
So, today my bill has a 27 buck late fee charge. I check my records. I never got a bill from them last month so it was a bill for two months.
I called the line and got a girl named Jennifer. I explained: "you didn't send me a bill."
She: "We did, if you didn't get it you can pay by going online and finding out what you owe."
Me: "But, if you look up my record you'll see that I've paid up in full every month since LBJ was President. Doesn't that indicate the mistake is yours?"
Her: "I see your record. But that's the past, this is now and you didn't pay."
Me: "How is it that the gas company and the electric company and every other bill I pay sends me a bill every month but now I need to get online to find out when you are going to send one?"
Her: "We sent you a bill because it's here on my computer."
Me: "OK" I wanted to say "BITCH" but I knew it would offend Cubbies.
I'm sure Jennifer gets lots of calls from people who are negligent and use the "I never got a bill" excuse to avoid the penalty. But here is my question:
If credit card companies want to make money on people that never get hit with late fees, might they not skip a billing and charge the fee?
If this happens again I'm gonna change credit cards. Anyone have a competitor of Chase?

Call again, ask for a manager, if they don't fix it, ask to be directed to the department that can cancel your account.
That will fix it.

Last Dec the CC folks sent me a bill which I received the day after the payment was allegedly due. I called them and told them I wasn't paying the late fee, he said OK and cancelled it.

Your conspiracy theory assumes complete competence on the part of the USPS.

That could also indicate you're approaching the age where you become forgetful

I'm not sure there is a good credit card company. You get what you pay for and none of us are paying up front use of card fees, it's all back end gotcha fees.

Wells Fargo
I've never personally used Wells Fargo but have dealt with some of their HR employees and they do seem to have a "small town" corporate culture, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were better than average for service.

I like to pay my credit cards off every month as well. I typically do it on-line. I usually get the bill in the mail, open it, review it, and then go on-line to pay it immediately.
A few months back, I didn't get my paper bill and I never went on-line. I had only charge something like $30 the previous month.
The next month I get the paper bill and I was charged a $35 late fee (on a $30 balance).
I called, explained the situation, and girl credited my account because she could see I had been paying it in full every month for the past four or five years on-line, two or three days after the billing date.
She told me that I should set up an automatic payment on-line so that they will always take out the minimum due each month. That way, I never have to worry about a late fee if something happens to my paper bill and I "forget".
I don't want to pay the entire amount automatically just in case I get charged something fraudulently. I can then challenge the fraudulent charges. But, by automatically paying the minimum, I never have to worry about late fees.
Oh, and I've never paid the minimum because I've always paid the entire amount before the minimum was due. But, at least I'm protected.

Hey Zach, with as many posts you have on here, I'm sure you're proficient enough to pay online. Its usually really easy and safe.
Why wouldn't you give it a try?
You're paying for stamps as it is.

I'm surprised they wouldn't waive the fee, maybe she was new to the job.
Also surprised you didn't know you owed money that month.
I set up an automatic debit from my bank to send my card issuer a check for $50 every month so that if I do forget, get hospitalized, or whatever that at least I don't get hit with late fees and risk my credit rating.

First I just want to say that it's awesome that you pay off every month. The only flaw is that you must know by now when the bill is due. I certainly know when mine are due whether or not they mail one to me.

You should change anyway. That's pretty dick. How long have you been with them?
Chase fricked me once, too. I signed up for their electronic checking account link online, and I entered what I thought was my checking account #, hit enter, then it told me my checking account was linked! So I pay my bill.
Then the evening before the bill was due I realized that I didn't enter in my checking account information right. I immediately went online, corrected the information, and sent another payment, but it wasn't going to be processed in time for the due date. So I emailed them and told them my situation, how THEIR computer told me my checking account was linked, and how that was indeed not the case apparently. Didn't matter. $40 late fee. I had that card since I was 18 and had been late only once prior to that.
So I paid the card off, ripped it up, and have carried a zero balance since. I figure that's even better than canceling the card because they still have to deal with the cost of having it around in their system. frick Chase.

Same thing happened with me on my mortgage, except I kept paying it every month. I finally contacted them to ask why I no longer got a statement, and they said once you make two online payments you are automatically taken out of the system to receive the statements in the mail. Would have been ok if they had started emailing the statements to me, but they didn't do that either.

I was just on the phone for 58+ minutes discussing a CC firm/banks f-up of not applying a large check I sent them to pay off an expiring 0% balance transfer (I sent the $ 3-weeks prior to expiration) and instead applied it to a second balance which was fixed at 1.9% for life. It took 7 frickin people until they agreed to fix it and threatening to withdraw my CD's/savings from their institution which were > 20x the card balances. Wow, what a bunch of assholes.
