Good point.
I say add one team to each conference.
Every team plays a round robin schedule in their conference. The top six teams from each conference make the playoffs, with the top two seeds in each getting a first round bye, as it is now.
Seeds 3-6 of each conference would go like this:
1) AFC 3 hosts NFC 6
2) NFC 3 hosts AFC 6
3) A4 hosts N5
4) N4 hosts A5
5) Winner of game 1 travels to NFC 2
6) Winner of game 2 travels to AFC 2
7) Winner of game 3 travels to NFC 1
8) Winner of game 4 travels to AFC 1
Winner of game 5 travels to winner of game 8
Winner of game 6 travels to winner of game 7
