THIBODAUX — The Thibodaux Tigers got off to a fast start and never let Vandebilt Catholic catch up.
The Tigers took advantage of a turnover and field position to score three touchdowns in the first half of the nightcap game at the Thibodaux Regional Medical Center Jamboree in Nicholls State’s John L. Guidry Stadium.
Those three touchdowns held up as the Tigers’ defense kept Vandebilt out of the endzone in a 19-0 win.
The Thibodaux-Vandebilt tilt was the second game of the night as E.D. White Catholic and Assumption played in the first game.
Thibodaux coach Dennis Lorio was happy with the fast start, but he said there is work to do to get ready for the season.
“The defense got us a turnover and we punched it in and we feel good about that,” Lorio said. “We had some big plays, but they gave us some different looks and we got some inside rushing yards. We made some big plays, but it is a jamboree and we wanted to look at some people. Give Vandebilt some credit though. They scrapped with us. There is a lot of work we have to do, but it is a good start.”
Thibodaux got its first points of the game thanks to a turnover. Tigers linebacker Dillon Landry intercepted a tipped pass and ran it down to the Terriers’ 8. Two plays later, Thibodaux quarterback Trovon Reed found tight end Dylan Douglas on a 5-yard scoring pass. Drew Williamson added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 12:16 on the clock.
Vandebilt had trouble moving the ball early in the game and had a three and out on its next possession.
Thibodaux took over at midfield and scored five plays later on a 37-yard scoring strike from Reed to Karmichael Green. The Tigers missed the extra point, leaving the score 13-0 with 7:45 left in the first half.
With 5:22 on the clock, Vandebilt finally picked up a first down, but was unable to sustain the drive, giving it back to Thibodaux.
Thibodaux’s Joshua Johnson fielded the punt at the Terriers’ 49 and ran it back 23 yards down to the 26. Three plays later, Tigers fullback Brandon Duncan scored on a 3-yard run. Once again, the Tigers missed the extra point, leaving the score 19-0 with 1:55 remaining in the first half.
Late in the second half, the Terriers put together an 11-play drive down to the Tigers’ 9, but the clock ran out.
First-year Vandebilt coach Laury Dupont said that his team played better after the rough start.
“We played a little better, but in all due respect, Coach Lorio played a lot of kids and we kept in our older guys,” Dupont said. “We had a chance to score at the end and we didn’t so I’m disappointed with that. You can’t turnover the ball to a team like Thibodaux High, you will get beat. It was a tipped pass and we should have caught it. That hurts when you give up seven points in the first three minutes of the game.”
Patrick St. Martin rushed for 51 yards on 10 carries to lead Vandebilt and Aaron Smith finished with 36 yards on six carries.
Reed finished the game 2-for-3 for 42 yards and two touchdowns, while Johnson rushed for 35 yards on six carries and Duncan finished with 27 yards on six carries.
Lorio thanked Nicholls State for hosting the jamboree and the community for supporting high school football.
“I think it was a great thing for all four teams involved to play at Nicholls stadium with the new scoreboard and lights,” Lorio said. “We are thrilled for this opportunity and for the community to come out and support us as well as Nicholls.”

Spoke with coach Lorio briefly this morning actually. For some reason I forgot to ask him about Trovon.
