Now, if you ain't making plays. ... Look, I'm a realist. I know if I don't do my thing this year, they're probably going to get rid of my arse. I'm a grown man.

Glad to see this. If he can play like he used to, that'd really help out

Oh god, I wonder if he will treat this year like his "contract year"

it's more of a systemic change. old regime vs new regime
quote:
"They want us to be a lot faster. The way the defense was before they wanted us to be pluggers, to hold up the run and be sturdy on the run. Now they want us to be able to move a lot since we're going to be pass-rushing a lot more. Gregg (Williams) just wants us to be flying around a lot more."
the old coaches wanted grant/smith/ellis fatter to clog up blockers
the new regime wants everyone smaller and faster

I wasn't all that impressed with him the year he got his big contract

I think that was SFP's point

grant was never worth the money we paid. Smith has not produced up to the level of the contract we gave him, but he has the ability to play at that level. The problem is the old regime made him get bigger and he lost his 4.55 speed and pass rushing
hopefully smith gets into the 265-270 range and is allowed to use his speed/burst to disrupt plays
grant? we're just kind of stuck with him. we signed him because our D blew and he was one of the better players on it. the fanbase would have lost confidence in the franchise if we let grant go. we should be able to afford cutting him after this year

I know Grant will never be the prototypical speed rusher like Dwight Freeney. However, he can't rely solely on his bulk to get to the quarterback. He needs to find that happy medium with his weight so he can have that explosive burst and be able to keep his wind the whole game. IMO 280 is a good size

Grant is capable of earning his paycheck. He is a run stuffing DE which is hard for casual fans like SFP to grasp sometimes.

you can get run-stuffing DEs for a lot cheaper than top-flight DE money

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Grant play some if not the majority at DT and McCray at his former DE spot.

With any defense this is the tradeoff... Some are able to shrink this gap better than others,
At the DE position when you get up the field to the point 5 or 7 steps behind the Center you might get to the QB but you might let the RB run right by... the same is true for Inside DL's if you pick a gap to move up field the OL will push you through the hole...
GW wants chaos, gold helmets flying around looking to decleat or decapitate dudes. The old saying tackle the Runningback on your way to the Quaterback !
I like chaos, but don't be suprised if we continue to give up big plays on defense, the thinking is we will hopefully create some big plays as well especially as the season rolls on.

You may disagree with SFP, but he is not a casual fan. He puts in more time researching football than most good GM's, that's why his advice is usually better

Why would I knight SFP, law peeps like him love to argue. I just thought it was laughable that a person with well over 100,000 posts on a sports board was called a casual fan.

I just thought it was funny. Obviously, I was the only one.
