Do you think they are getting some technical advice on some of the stuff they're building or repairing?

Yes, the little disclaimer vaguely admits the producers give off camera suggestions. I found it for the first time with the mini marathon they had the other night, still have several to watch on the DVR but it's the most entertaining reality TV show I've seen in a while. I guess part of it is because I'm taking notes for the apocolypse. Never thought about getting a goat and a chicken, may have to look into that

The show seems pretty scripted/planned. The producers clearly have set directions they want them to go in. Like the gasifier, I bet they had the potential participants fill out "what would you do in the apocolypse" survey's and the guys wood gasifier story came out so they picked him. I wonder what made them pick the rest of the people. Outside of the handyman and the excon, the rest have been pretty useless.

I agree, most of the people on the show wouldnt be alive if they tried to survive on their own. I thought the machinist would be able to come up with some better ideas than the washing machine, at least he'll fight if he has to. The old hippie mad scientist, at least that's how I think of him, is learning what it's like to be on the opposite side of pacifism. I also think its scripted but I like seeing some of the mechanical ideas and thinking, "Damn, I wonder if I wouldve thought of that?"
