yes he can. josh booty and matt mauck did it.
Mauck and Booty were able to come back for football because Mauck had never enrolled in college and never played pro football and Booty, who had enrolled at LSU, still had 2 years of eligibility left.

Booty and Mauck played pro baseball before ever enrolling in college. Thus, the clock didn't start on their athletic eligibility until after their baseball careers ended. Mitchell has already been in college, so he has five years to complete four seasons of eligibility, and that five-year clock started when he enrolled.
There's no way a Major League Baseball team is going to sign a first-round draft pick and then let him play football, with its risk of injury.
As soon as he signs -- and he will sign -- college football is over for him.

That is correct, he is done.
However, LSU did have a player play football for four years at the same time that he played minor league baseball. Jamie Howard

Mewalde Moore out of Belair also did this at Tulane. I member for a fact he would play pro minor league baseball in Oregon and College football for Tulane in the fall.
It was really cool cause he would come hit with us at Parkview with the wood bat to get ready for baseball. The way I think he explained it to us was he could play four years of football like ya'll are saying and simulatneously play pro baseball in the summer since he never played baseball for Tulane and gave up his amatuer baseball status completly.
Great Athlete and a really nice guy, I was happy to see him get to play for the Vikings and most recently win a super bowl ring with the Steelers. Anyways I think that was how that worked, as long as he played the other sport professionally he had his normal four or five years eligability in college football and the pro baseball could be played in the football off-season.

Depends on the contract, but you have to expect he is finished with college for now.

this is the answer. he is still ELIGIBLE to play football next fall if he wished to do so; however, it would never happen because no team would allow their first round pick to play college football.

you can't do both
yeah, you can. I think both Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson did it when they were at Texas.

unless after baseball he wants to finish up
Except he won't have any eligibility. If you're going to try to anoint yourself as an expert on here, you should try not to be so wrong imho.

He as an individual had sponsorship deals. This is what made him ineligible, not his being considered a professional in a sport other than the one he participated in the NCAA.
If the White Sox were stupid, Mitchell could play, but my money says as soon as he is done with the CWS, his bags will be on a plane to wherever he will call home for the rest of the minor league season.

J mitchell said 2 yrs ago coming out of Westgate high school in New Iberia, La., that he would play both baseball and football for 2 yrs @ LSU and after he would decide on one sport, he is through with Football no doubt about it....Congrats to Jarred Mitchell...I dont know if too many people have ever noticed or knew this, but Jarred throws a football right handed and throws a baseball left...he's not only a Great athlete but a down to earth humble kind of guy..Good luck to him with the White Sox..

mitchell could play football this season if he wanted to ... doubtful he will as a first round pick, though ...

Thw Phillies did with Ricky Williams. If he wants to he can do both, If your as old as I am you will remmber Jamie Howard played pro baseball in the summer & college football the following fall.

We got some dumb MoFo's on this board. Comparing Ricky Williams (who won a Heisman) to Jared Mitchell (who caught 12 passes in three years).
If he signs a contract with the White Sox, you have a better chance of playing football next year.

Lets see.... guaranteed millions of dollars playing professional baseball, or risk losing it with the possibility of tearing an ACL or MCL?

quote:because ricky williams would have quit baseball, which he did, if the phillies told him not to play football. ricky's future was always in football. if jared mitchell had any sort of future in football, then yeah they MIGHT let him play; however, i'm sure that there would be some sort of clause in his contract saying if he was hurt playing football, then the baseball team wouldn't owe him shite if it ended his career.

cumdumpster, if he leaves to play baseball and comes back his eligibility is going to be used up (since my post was talking about Mauck/Booty who came back after playing baseball). I'm fully aware that he still has eligibility left since he isn't a senior
Posted on 6/12/09 at 6:08 am to TigerBait1127
He needs to quit football and concentrate on learning how to hit a curve ball.
