It also seems to me that men in prison aren't in a hurry to risk their lives to keep a fellow prisoner from being buttf'ed. You're basically trying to stay alive and not get buttf'ed yourself.

This is why prisoners form gangs and crap.....to either defend themselves from getting buttf'ed or killed or to buttF and kill others.

And Andy's friends didn't seem like the gang type anyway.

Er, they were in a jail cell. You don't get to just walk around when you want to. The sisters were let out by the guards.

This post makes the most sense.

Red and Andy were friends at the time. Granted, their relationship developped more later, but there was a mutual liking. Red and his group, were powerless against the Sisters. They were passive, didn't want to be labeled as trouble makers(by guards), and were just not present. It is prison afterall. The Sisters always struck when Andy was alone. Two years of agony..

But just as Jesus was persecuted....so was Andy.
