Watching Malkovich and Glenn Close spar was fantastic. I even liked the French remake (came out about 2000 I think) with Rupert Everett and Catherine Deneuve set in 1960's Paris.

I saw the play before I saw the movie, and I still think that John Malkovich was badly miscast. Valmont is supposed to be handsome, sexy, and irresistable to women. JM may be a fine actor, but handsome and sexy he aint. Glenn Close, however, was spot on. She was nominated for an Oscar for that performance and should've won. BTW, there's another version of the story with Annette Benning and Colin Firth, but in that version the main characters aren't made to be nearly as evil.

Valmont.
