I think JL's progress needs to be made in reading defenses and understanding what to do.

Definitely that, but I think he most needs to grow some balls/moxie/confidence. It might be that he can't. But if he can, I think he can be a very, very good college QB. But Jefferson still might wind up being too good to beat out, though.

I'm not sure exactly how you use those terms, but the way I understand them they are the least of Lee's problems. No matter how bad things were going for him at any point in a game, the kid just kept going at it and trying to make plays (and usually succeeding). Anybody who can endure starts like he did against Auburn and Georgia and Troy and still come back to make plays later in the game definitely has what I consider "confidence" and "moxie."

If anything, his problem might be having too much confidence in his arm's ability to make plays. If that were his only problem, it would pretty likely to improve a lot (most QBs with that overconfidence issue do get a lot better at it as they mature). Unfortunately, he does seem to also have problems reading defenses and checking down his progressions. Not as much trouble as a lot of people here seem to think (e.g., those who insist that he has never once thrown to a second receiver), but he definitely seemed to have problems adjusting to Div. 1A speed and defenses.
