Miles knows that an open competition is the best way to push these guys in order to make sure the QB position is as strong as it can be next year. He stated recently that having an apparent competition between Russell and Flynn (even though he knew Russell would be the starter) was a big benefit for the team.
Bingo! For recruiting... and more importantly, lining up the best players as starters/backups... you don't annoint anyone as a starter in the offseason. When you can recruit great athletes you let them compete every day, on the field, off the field, in the classroom, and in all other respects within the program.
Once the coaches decide who starts, then the importance of their support for a player who makes mistakes comes into play.
As long as you know you're the guy going into the next game, that's all you need to know as a player.
After last year in particular, it's not like Miles has shown a propensity to yank players for game mistakes.
