I think that it all stems from the fact that it is Louisiana. Most of the categories (health, education, etc.) states are ranked on, Louisiana seems to be always at or near the bottom. LSU is basically our one shining star--something to feel proud of.
We feel that it is the responsiblity of our fellow Louisianians to keep it that way. When kids leave the state for other schools it is basically like them betraying us.
Yes, we need to recruit out of state, but that is why LSU has such rabid fans. No matter what is going on at home or just as a state, LSU is our pick me up (usually).

This is exactly the same reason so many older gumps revere Bear Bryant. His football program was the only thing in Alabama to be proud of in the 60's and 70's.
