Did LSU benefit that much from winning the national title?

It's almost a common theme amongst sports pundits and spinners that LSU garnered a great recruiting class almost solely due to the 'National Recruiting Bump'.

We won that title in '07 and didn't have the number one class in '08. We went 8-5 yet had the number one or two class depending on where you get your information this year.

Do you believe that the biggest reason LSU was so successful in recruiting this year is due to our winning a national title in the '07 season?

I've always bought into it because most of the recruiting is done while the team is still the defending nat'l champs. We really couldn't cash in on the NC last year in recruiting because there is only a month and change between the NC game and NSD and many kids have made up their minds by that point. All year this year, we were able to talk kids into coming to play with the defending national champs.

Bama have done nothing since 92, but they pulled in the number one class last year. The SEC is the premiere conference, especially with the espn deal. Add that to having great facilities, campus life, and a few good recruiters on staff and you can get great classes w/o recent titles. Although, I doubt it hurts to show them the crystal balls.

i think it matters less for LSU recruiting b/c LSU is the only real program in a talent-rich state, so the La. best recruits will always consider LSU anyway.

Excellent point. I'm just wondering if these three other reasons aren't why LSU has been successful in recruiting the past couple of years:

Saban was a great recruiter.
Les is a great recruiter.
Louisiana is the flagship university of a talent rich state and surrounding states.

Granted winning those titles helped, but it seems that sportswriters are convinced that winning the titles are the main reason we've been so successful recruiting wise.

Ranking of signing classes has limited predictive usefulness.

Absolutely! But keeping with why we've been successful, I just don't think this is solely due to our success on the field. It helps, but it isn't the only reason and certainly may not be the main reason.

FWIW the La talent pool was down last year.

I don't think LSU's on the field accomplishments are the sole reason for our recruiting success, but it helps. I think it's especially important in the recruitment of out of state players. LSU shouldn't ever have a problem keeping most of the elite LA talent in state, but doing well on the field may help land recruits from TX, FL, etc.

True however we did do fairly well that year. I believe the state of Alabama had a better talent pool that same year, correct?

Yes. Best in 2 decades by some estimates.
