did we ever have a real point guard? chris jackson was on another plane...stanley roberts was under the influence..shaq was constantly in needless foul trouble and there were an awful lot of great programs at their peak. unc, unlv, georgetown, syracuse, kentucky, arkansas, indiana, etc., real basketball schools with real point guards that made their foul shots at crunch time. Brown and Winters led those horses to water...but they couldn't make them drink (or think).

Actually Blanton's game winner was CJ's freshman year and we won that one 88-87.
We beat them again the next year when CJ was a soph and Shaq a frosh in the 107-105 game and then Loyola the next week.
But again by the end of that year the team was totally dysfunctional and when they did win it was on talent alone. I remeber we lost to an Auburn team in the first round of the SEC tourney that had absolutely no business even competing with us.

good point about a true point guard but jackson was no slouch, just wasn't big on assists.
day and mayberry ate our lunch during that time - not to mention the GT trifecta during the ncaa run.
now looking back, that period was dysfunctional but talented - certainly a waste.
roberts was more polished around the rim than shaq at that time - like someone said earlier, shaq was a work in progress.

Tex was long gone by that point and I do think Stro and others amended it later to ask how we never made a Sweet 16, which is really astonishing if one things about it.
T.J. Pugh wasn't a scorer but a more traditional pass first guard Shaq's last year who could handle the ball and play decenet defense.

Cremins is a great guy.
I was on the track team at GT during those early years with Bobby Cremins and Bobby Ross (another fantastic guy). The final four and national football championship was my senior year. Great times because we were absolute doormats during the 70's and early 80's.
I had a rough childhood amongst the UGA fans!
Anyway...enough reminiscing...this is a LSU board...you guys do not care!

if you were a fan of college basketball during that time, you knew who GT was not to mention UNLV, NC, Arkansas, Duke, Michigan....

yeah I remember that. Randy Livingston and Ronnie Henderson was Dale's last great recruiting class. It was his last hurrah and then there was Lester Earl. Too bad about the injuries it could have been a good team. Dale's last teams could have been pretty good.

He is one that wasn't mentioned yet. The last 4 minutes of the Arizona game where they came in here ranked high(maybe 1 or 2) was the most dominating of a college center that I can remember.

IMHO had Livingston stayed healthy he's there two years tops so I'm not so sure Dale keeps it going anyway. Dale didn't land a big recruit after those two and put himself into the position where he felt he had to sign Earl.
He apparently hadn't evaluated him to closely though, cause talk about overrated. That guy that was dissing Tasmin must not have been around then.
Dale let recruiting relationships dissolve. There used to be a big high school tournament in the PMAC called the Super-6 there every year and I remember Perry Clark being there and joking about why Dale wasn't there in his own building.
He was always distracted by other interests but the distraction became serial in those later years. He actually thought he could coach up any player with his "triumph of the human spirit" motivation. That was proven to be a foolish notion.

It was 107-105 and UNLV got a meaningless 3-pointer as time ran out. It was a great game, only surpassed by the win over Loyola-Marymount, 148-141 in OT.
I was at both games, some of the best LSU basketball ever.
With Jackson, O'Neil and Roberts it makes me wonder just how the hell they didn't win titles. Brown was a genius at getting relatively untalented teams to overachieve, but it seemed like every time he got title-worthy talent something went wrong.

Here is what happened. It is real simple. Shaq and Roberts were freshmen and really raw.CJ was a soph and really awesome. We just so happened to barely lose to Georgia Tech who went to the Final Four that year. It was just bad luck. Doesn't really matter though, because even though we beat UNLV earlier in the year, no one was stopping them in the 1990. Probably could have gone to at least the Elite 8 had we not lost to GT.
CJ left, Stanley Roberts flunked out, and for the next two years, Shaq had much less talent around him. We got the crap beat out of us by UConn who had no business being an 11 seed plus Shaq was playing hurt. Year after that, guess what, once again we lost in the second round to a Final Four team. shite happens.

You're right alajones. Nobody was beating UNLV that year.
But aside from the big three, Maurice Williamson, Wayne Sims and Vernel Singleton were on that 1990 team.
But again it was dysfunctional. CJ was a spectacular talent but Dale IMHO gave him too much latitude. The offense was pretty much clear out for Chris and maybe you can get a bucked on a rebound.
He was actually playing a more traditional point guard role his freshman year, deffering to the senior Blanton, but once he went off in that Florida game that was out the window and he was never reigned in after that.
Made for great entertainment, but not always the formula for winning games.

Didn't Tom Hammonds also play with Anderson, Scott, and Oliver? I think he was the big man.
