1949, old Tulane stadium on Tulane campus. Grass field. New grass was not planted. The LSU students placed salt on the grass in a big "LSU" covering 50 yard line. No logos in those days on the field. The lettering "faced" the west sideline so it was correct side up viewed from the press box. The salt killed grass and made the LSU lettering brown while the rest of the field was green. However, Tulane students had a trick too. They stole Mike the tiger, who was in the traveling cage, much like today. The students taking Mike to the game in New Orleans stopped to have coffee on the way - and the cage with Mike was disconected from the auto, and Tulane students took him. State police search with radio announcements with drama. Mike was voluntarily returned just before game. That year LSU beat Tulane (SEC champ), North Carolina (ACC champ), and ? Texas A&M (SWC champ). LSU went to Sugar Bowl and played Oklahoma on Jan 1, 1950.. Quarterback for OKLA was Daryl Royal; OKLA ran "split T" - triple option. LSU repeatedly tackled the player that had carried the ball the previous down. Okla won 35-0. That is the only time other than the 2003 BCS Championship that LSU played OKLA.
