I have not. Apparently the best shot is tonight. I am going to my folks tomorrow at Lake Martin. I might go up to the fire tower atop Smith Mountain on Saturday night to see if I can see them.

I saw them once from the window of my plane over Anchorage.

As a child in central Virginia, we had one night when the clouds were dull red all night long.
I have also seen the northern lights in Iceland where they were in the open sky and green wavy-sort of things.

Never seen them myself before, and I can't recall ever hearing of them being recorded as far south as Alabama either.
I know they have gotten as far south as Virginia. Not sure when the last time was, but there are reports of them in December 1862. There was an aurora visible the night after the Battle of Fredericksburg. Soldiers from the lower latitudes believed it was a sign from God either supporting their cause or condemning them all for the number of deaths inflicted during the battle.

I remember seeing them one time at home in northern La when I was a kid. Late 80's or early 90's.

We used to see them quite a bit at our place in the Northwoods of the Scons.
