We’ve all heard money is the root of all evil? My question today is, do you believe money brings out the worst in people? For example, I’ve heard stories where, when the last living parent dies, instead of comforting each other, the children of the deceased fight over the parent’s material possessions and what inheritance was left behind. I’ve never understood that.

What is your take on this subject?

Money doesn’t bring out the worst in people, it reveals what they truly are.

Money, power, any kind of success that other people are envious of tends to do this.

The people who have it can become assholes or worse assholes than before either because they have it and lord it over people or who do it to insulate themselves by people coming to them for handouts.

The actual quote is that the *love* of money is the root of all evil - not money itself.

Money has the potential to trigger a myriad of emotions.

In the context of someone dying and people fighting over their money - - it is guilt. When we lose someone, we always challenge ourselves that we did not do enough when they were alive to show them our love. We tell ourselves we did and that as a physical manifestation of this - - our loved one would have wanted me to have "X". Guilt, even moreso than anger or jealously, can take people to very dark places and be the driving forces behind very bad decisions.

Depends on the person. If they're faith centered in the lord with a charitable heart of Thanksgiving I don't see how money would affect them for the worse. Unfortunately there's plenty people who are out to let their money corrupt themselves and others.

The most misquoted platitude of all time.

"The love of money is the root of all evil." is true enough.

It can lead to greed and greed brings out the worst in people. Money can lead to stability and acts of generosity for some people.

We have a little money. And I think it has allowed my wife and I to do things and have great experiences that we otherwise wouldn't have. So, money doesn't bring out the worst in people.

Greed is what brings out the bad. In-laws that don't have much feel entitled to ask for stuff. For instance an expectation that i should pay for dinner, get togethers, etc. Always making passive-aggressive comments like "man, it must be nice to be able to afford a new boat". And then bitch because I don't invite them fishing.

I have great Siblings. When our remaining parent passed we followed the will as our parents’ wished. Assets were divided equally, house sold and same. Personal property was discussed and we basically agreed to what each of us would like. There were no disagreements among us 4 brothers and 1 sister. Much love among us from day one and we never wavered.

Mom painted and we each chose our favorite paintings. My mom also placed a name on a handful of things she wanted each of us to have.

"where there is a will there is a family......"

Inheritance is a pretty bad point in someone's life to judge their character...its a period fraught with opportunities to show one's arse. First and foremost, at best, emotions are raw. Toss in some money and old grievances and its the perfect storm for humans to act their worse.

It is almost universal, even when there is no inheritance involved.

Nothing wrong with money or wealth, its just that most of us arent wired to handle it very well.

It changes us instead of us harnessing it. Greed is worse than lust as a motivator for evil.
