Why didn’t your mom get a 2nd job? Or a third for your dad?
Why didn’t your dad get two better jobs than the two insufficient ones he had?

Because I was willing to and volunteered to get one. As did my brother. We did that so mom, who hadn’t been in school since HS and was a lifelong factory worker could study to be a nurse. Stepdad had no education and was also a factory worker. He took a factory job at half his previous pay and painted houses on his days off. I didn’t feel like laying around the house while they struggled to make ends meet during that time of “transition”. It’s not like they forced me to do it. And we probably would’ve eaten if I hadn’t bought groceries one week a month, but I’m sure it helped them.

I missing the part where you a part of this at all. You're leveling criticism where you should be leveling praise. Both parents did what they could to get back on track after the rug was pulled out from under them; their teenage sons pitched in to help temporarily. That's what families do.
