Meat and 3 is usually a more compact cafeteria. New Orleans meat and 3 (hot plate) is served in styrofoam to go. Birmingham/Nashville meat and 3 is served on plates to be eaten at a table with waitresses.

NOLA used to have a small handful of places like this downtown (Commerce, P&G, Hobnobbers) but they've all either shut down or retooled into something a bit different - Commerce, for instance.

I always just heard them called "lunch places" never "meat and 3" or "hot plates."

Sucks that there really aren't any more.

Piccadilly is a “meat and three”

There’s a bunch of hot plate lunch spots in the area. They aren’t cafeteria style meat and three though
