Interstate highways are federal property, making this a federal crime... that will not get prosecuted, of course.

While interstate highways are mostly federally funded, they are NOT "federal property"-- they are the property of each of the states they are located in, and maintained by each state's highway department or Department of Transportation.
Nor are federal non-interstate highways: US 90, US 61, US 41, etc.
This is why you often see pavement changes at state lines, like this one on I-55 at the Louisiana/ Miss. border:
