HTV just posted a video clip of the USS Kidd making its way up the Houma Navigational Channel to Thoma-Sea Shipyard to get an overhaul.

She really is a badass ship. I didn't know until the other day that per the US Navy, they are not allowed to run her engines.
If you don't know the ice cream machine story, it's a great one. In dock, the seamen pooled their money together and bought an ice cream machine. They had a dock worker cut a hole in the ship so they could get the machine into the galley, then sealed the hole back up. Only problem was, the bigger ships had ice cream machine mixes, not smaller destroyers. So when a pilot was shot down or crashed in the water, the Kidd would pick up the pilot and "hold him ransom" until the aircraft carrier sent over ice cream mixes. Now, they are the only Navy ship allowed to fly the Jolly Roger as they are the Pirates of the Pacific.

Very cool to see the old girl moving again.

Thing looks small compared to tug! It's crazy how these ships have grown in size. I know this is a destroyer and was built to move fast, but damn... these gunner ships are massive now!

Look at that magnificent beast sail. What a beautiful image...
They should have allowed some old sailor vets ride her as she drifted into port.

It's cool to see her underway, even if its being towed. I think Kidd is the only Fletcher left in its WW2 configuration. The others were made into razor blades or were updated and reconfigured after the war.

A diver once saw a catfish under the KIDD that could easily swallow a grown man whole.

I had the opportunity to spend the night on there when I was 11 or so... Event sponsored by the VFW in Baker.

I’m going to go see her in a couple of weeks by driving my boat there.
For those who would like to know her history there is a lot on the web.
You can start with this. History of the USS Kidd. .
That’s the Kidd dropping depth charges.
When I was I kid in 1971 I was able to procure three gross of M-80’s. The real thing.
I dropped “depth charge’s “ all over Terrebonne Parish and the GOM.

I have been watching the YouTube channel on the battleship New Jersey and they just dry docked it a month ago. Been pretty cool to see the process they go through to fix them up.
Another note, did some rescue training on the Kidd 5 or 6 years ago. Was pretty neat to do senerios in the boiler room where majority of the public can't go. Matter of fact, they have great ac down there these days.
