The money must flow, unabated. Evolve or die. Tax em, that's what I say.

I think a lot of the more traditional churches that most my age grew up in such as baptists, Methodists, etc saw their membership numbers dwindle over the past 20-30 years. While this happened, they watched the new-age "non-denomination" churches and mega churches explode.

When I started dating my wife, she had been a member at a new school type church throughout her teens and I went woth her a few times. After the 3rd or 4th visit with her, I let her know that I did not agree with some of the stuff I saw there and would not be going back there and invited her to come to my small Baptist church with less than 120 active members. As OP stated: open gays attending and being welcomed, unwed parents everywhere, addicts everywhere, etc. The normal Sunday service felt more like a concert and revival every week. It's was just way too much for me. I'm not an extrovert at all so it was all just very uncomfortable for me. Not to mention the money that the church leadership threw around in what seemed like a wasteful manner to me.

So all of the more traditional churches and their leadership saw these places growing like crazy and figured they better adapt or fade to oblivion.
