Saw a wildfire in Washington state go from a small, contained fire to serious problem which torched an entire mountain in about 15 minutes and continued for several days. It went from about a 100 foot long line of grass slowly burning to the top of a mountain that was about 3000 feet higher than the base in less than 15 minutes. It was about a mile from my office trailer and exterior paint on the trailer was scorched by the heat. There was a chain link fence about 20 feet from the trailer between the fire and the trailer. In a couple of months that fence was rusted where the galvanizing had been scorched off it by that fire. It was a sight to behold....made an ungodly noise as it traveled up that mountain. There was a radio tower and building on top of that mountain and it was nearly untraceable when that fire roared past it. that small fire leapt across several mountain tops in the area and burnt a helluva bunch of acres within a few hours and remained out of control in places for a couple of weeks. Had it came toward us instead of away from us there is no way everyone would have gotten out of the way as quick as it went from contained to burning uncontrollably.
