Holes are a few inches wide.

are there tunnels close to the surface? If so it’s a mole or vole. They are eating grubs.
If you have a dog they’ll take care of them. Mine cleared 6 acres in a couple months

A method I’ve seen work at times is placing a garden hose in one of the holes and flooding the little bastard.

Looks like armadillo digging up grubs

Looks like armadillos if there is no connecting tunnel.
Armadillo holes have a slight backward angle to them. Think of how they dig with their feet directly out in front of their body with not much play side-to-side. They smell really well and can sniff out a single grub below ground. They'll dig several little holes usually getting a grub in each one. A skunk digs more randomly and makes a mess of the ground. Moles/voles have connecting tunnels between holes that run just below the surface.

Opossum or armadillo.
2 years in a row had that. Was guessing armadillo but caught opossum both times.
