Did falcons drafting penix show how bad the cousins' signing was?

Wrong.

I'm going to copy/paste my reply in one of the other Rattler threads:

Jury's still out on Haener. Obviously Rattler is an unknown. Let the new OC work with these youngsters and whoever earns the backup position (please God not Peterman!) will most likely take some live snaps at some point in the season. Then we'll start to get a better idea about what we need next draft class.

Who cares? It was a mid round pick that didn’t work out. They need to keep swinging

QBs after the 2nd round are largely darts at a wall.

Nah

Just shows how much the saints suck at drafting

??

What?

Did you think Haener would be competing for the starting job already lol

He was drafted to be developed and see if he could one day compete for the starter job..same as Rattler

If Saints aren't drafting a 1st round QB they should be trying dart throws every season till they find a true franchise QB

This is more an indictment on Peterman but also long term planning for life after Carr

I think the Spencer Rattler pick shows how bad the Bo Nix pick was, if anything. We got a better QB prospect in rd 5, than the Broncos did at #12.

Low risk, high reward if either of them ever do anything noteworthy! I honestly can’t remember a 5th round pick, ever. Who can name one who did anything without using google?

Name one QB the Saints drafted and developed the past 5 seasons. Kubiak helped develop Purdy, so now let him work with Haener and Rattler. Let's see how much better they both get with great coaching.

Brock Purdy was the last guy drafted. Brady was also barely drafted. There are guys out there that can shock the world. It likely won’t be him or Haener but you gotta keep searching. New offensive staff gives me some hope.

I am more than okay with drafting a QB every year, especially on Day 3, until you get it right.

I think it more reflects a the change in offensive philosophy for the first time in 18 years. The Saints were constantly chasing the next Drew Brees. Smaller guy with somewhat questionable arm strength who was a better "touch" guy that great thower.

While Rattler is shorter like Brees and the others, he can snap throws off pretty quickly and did it against high level competition. He's more Baker Mayfield than poor man's Drew Brees. That's not to say he will ever start an NFL game. But I think with a new offensive approach for the first time in nearly two decades they Saints are no longer desperate to find a Brees clone.

Saints trade up for Haener too. I thought he would would be QB2 this season. Saints take late pick on QB isn't a bad thing. You have tp make that QB room strongest part of the team.

Not really. Haener was Senior Bowl MVP too. Now, the Back street Boy Hair, The Glamour shots, and the PED suspension does detract from him, but he is still in the rotation. Give him a chance. He studied with Gruden on his own time.

Heaner should have played the last half of the season.

We will forever be looking for the next Drew Brees by drafting people who only have one thing in common with Drew Brees- a lack of height.

It's hard for a 4th round QB to be an atrocious pick.

It's fair to say that the Saints aren't optimistic about him though. When that's the case, moving on quickly is the right decision.
