Do those exist in South Dakota now, let alone 20 years ago?

They're all over the place in Montana, but luckily the majority are down around Bozeman or near Missoula.

No idea. It's an excerpt from the book. May have been kids around that weren't inured to farm life yet.

iirc you're in/spend time in MT? What is the state income tax there?

I've kicked around moving west and SD doesn't have income tax but the scenery is lacking short of the Hills.

*Would not be considering Bozeman or Missoula. Or anywhere that has been taken over by "outsiders".

Yep, we have property in a few states, including Montana. We domicile in Florida, but I think Montana income tax is around 7%.

The northwest part of the state is some of the best land in the country. If you can find something outside of the popular areas, you're set. Our place is west of Kalispell/Whitefish near Ashley Lake.

Oh boy, I laugh when people move from state to state and throw this line out as if they’re not an outsider. I lived in northwest Montana for 7 years and it’s nothing but transplants.
