During the 10-yr period covering the NASA Moon program, the US devoted an avg 2.5% of GDP to the program. By comparison, the current total US Defense budget represents 2.5 to 3% of GDP.

That's why no other country has gone to the moon. The cost is astronomical compared to the benefit of doing something that's already been done. The govts of the totalitarian states that could have given it a shot during this 50 year period have had little interest in plowing that much of their budget into the fruitless pursuit. The money is much better spent trying to pacify their populations by propping up their measly (compared to the US) standard of living. Every other country in the world's first priority is still trying to pump their money into achieving military parity with the US. They simply can't afford a space race, no matter how much they might want to for bragging rights.

Technological advances, the rise of the multinational corporation and the unparalleled standard of living we enjoy here has allowed private enterprise to enter the field and rekindle excitement in space exploration. If Elon and Jeff want to pump billions into the race to Mars, more power to them!! A rising tide lifts all boats.

Like most other things in life, follow the money!
