Switzerland has some of the most permissive gun ownership laws in the world, and they are estimated to own about 27 firearms per 100 residents. They have a murder rate of 0.5 per 100,000.

To compare to the US: we own about 120 firearms per 100 residents. Our murder rate is about 6.4 per 100,000.

I'd say guns are super easy to get in the USA, and only "very easy" to get in Switzerland. Despite this, we have about 13 times their murder rate.

But even that's not a fair comparison, because a murder rate of 0.5 is among the lowest 1/3 or so in the world. In other words it's hard to have a major nation with a murder rate any lower than what Switzerland has, just because of the natural tendencies of a sizable group of people to have some bad ones who do bad things. Their murder rate is basically as low as you can have it. It's about the same as what China reports (assuming you can believe China's numbers), and as you'd expect in China it's extremely difficult to legally own a firearm as a private citizen.

So, gun ownership by itself is not the explanation.
