My kid’s 13U AAU bball team played another team with at least 2 kids that had tats. I know the world of youth basketball will put you in proximity of all kinds of walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds, but I was still pretty surprised.

They beat the absolute shite out of us btw. That was not a surprise.

well it's permanent. I have one I got 30 years ago. I've thought about getting one more, but never done it.

The fun part will be betting on what the tattoo was supposed to be?

The pretty butterfly on the breast will look like Rodan in freefall...

Watched a couple of old Perry mason episodes and the women of the 50s and 60s were looking outstanding. Well dressed and feminine and zero tattoos.

For women they lose their appeal when she gets fat and she's over 30 generally. Then it just looks gross.

There's a certain level of self-awareness that's lacking among today's young people. Some people can pull off a tattoo. Some look good wearing a certain style of clothes. Same with facial hair, etc.

It's a matter of not looking like a doofus. It's not easy to quantify, but you know it when you see it. Unfortunately, too many people today don't know it.

If you wonder if you'd look good with a tattoo; the answer is probably - no.

Yes something changes that. Old tattoos make it worse.

1) Is the current rise in tattoos just a trend or here to stay?

Trend.

2) What is driving the tattoo fad?

There’s a desire to be unconventional and “subversive” . Part of that is driven by marketing of new social norms.

Back when only undesirables such as criminals and circus carnies got tattoos, there wasn’t much research on long term health effects that resulted from the unnatural practice of injecting permanent ink into your skin. We didn’t care if they died early. It was an acceptable outcome.

But think we’ll have the same “no shite” realization that happened with smoking. We now wonder how anyone could have possibly concluded that smoking was safe and would have no long term negative consequences.

Now that a larger population are engaging in this trendy stupidity, we’ll see better research and will obviously conclude that there are significant health risks to such unnatural permanent injections.

The next generation will rightly conclude that the tattoo generation was among the dumbest to walk upright.

It's an instant class indicator. It won't be going away. Almost none of my friends have a tattoo and the very few that do have them hidden.

an instant class indicator your sample size is your tiny little southern bubble. I live amongst far more successful people here by most objective measures in Boulder, and many of them have tattoos

I agree. My 12 yo little girl is so beautiful. I cant imagine her defiling herself with a nasty tattoo.

She’s gonna get a tramp stamp in PCB when she’s 18. Just wait.

Hopefully.

Along with the nose ring/booger catcher phase. Actually that one might be worse.

I’ve always said, when they are 80 years old, that ain’t gonna look good.

I'll preface this by saying I don't have a tattoo. But nothing is gonna look good at 80

Just happened to notice a mid 20s chick at church this AM who was wearing a decent set of bell bottoms. Not the early 90s obscene ones, but still a definite bell shaped pants leg, with the cuff completely covering her shoes.

Yeah, I know, pics or GTFO, but I was in church, dammit.
