No, he will be called up. It has been said in many of these threads if you just search "Skenes" that they are getting him use to working every 5 days while limiting his innings. They will begin to stretch him out soon and he will be up jn May.

I doubt he will be up in May

They will factor in 100 pitches into any playoff start he could potentially have, whether it happens or not

And I also doubt that they intend to go past the 130 innings he threw in his most recent full season

They are stretching him out and getting used to the rotation. Additionally the moment they lock in contract control fir another season, he’s moving up.

This is 95% of what it's about. Not saving him, not trying to avoid a Joba situation...trying to keep him in the organization for the maximum amount of time.

You mean to tell me that the average rant poster is not more knowledgeable than every MLB and NFL front office in roster management? I don't believe it

Jack Leiter just made his MLB debut after a short stint in Triple A. Got shelled and sent back to the minors.

Teams don’t want their young pitchers to have drastic IP increases from one year to the next. Skenes threw 130 innings last year. Their goal for him this year is probably around 160. If he was an everyday starter in the majors opening day he’d blow by that. They’re trying to avoid a Strasburg or Joba situation where they can’t pitch him at the end of the year in a playoff run.

It’s not rocket science
It's not rocket science, but you got it wrong anyway.

It's all about his contract and the Pirates' control.

The Pirates can preserve a year of club control over Skenes by keeping him in the minors for three rotation cycles. If he stays in the minors for that time, he doesn't earn a full year of service time for 2024. This allows the Pirates to maximize the amount of time Skenes is in their organization.

This is not new, and it's not exclusive to pitchers. The Braves did the same thing with Ronald Acuña Jr. in 2018 by sending him to the minors to manipulate his service time.
