For welders, it'll be the guy that can weld exotic metals and so on. If you are going into a trade, plan on educating yourself for your entire lifetime.
The best welder I've ever known made more money out of his detached garage than he did at his day job. He had to turn away work all the time. He built a shop building on a property a mile from his house. When he "retired" he hired two guys to work for him and never had a slow day.

Sounds exactly like my shop.
I've worked in both.......mind numbing production and custom fab shops. Sometimes I miss just pushing a button and watching the machine go brrrrrrrt. Only rarely, though, and usually just when something fricks up.

Any trade now a days is a good thing. From what I see, you don’t have to show up on time or even show up at all, ghost customers, never finish a job, and write off your F250.
If you’re stable enough to get on with a legit company, then you have it made. Don’t do anything until you clock in. Then your first hour is eating breakfast and fixing coffee. Your next two hours are sitting around waiting on a permit. Oops, too late to start now, it’s lunchtime. Sit around and bitch about how the ‘office people’ never stay late. Piddle around and don’t really start to work until the overtime kicks in. Again, bitch about the ‘day crew’ not being anywhere to be found.
Get a divorce, blame the wife for all your debt.
Get the $90,000 bass boat repossessed and lose your home as you had a loan against that to get it, want someone to ‘pick up the payments’ on your F250.
Blame the democrats for your downfall. Start doing meth.

A cnc machinist isn't even a machinist.
Can he run a lathe? A press? A grinder? A polisher?
He runs ONE MACHINE.
That's why the tool and die /mold maker makes more money.

I did hear a baw at the boat ramp the other day tell another baw that a diesel mechanic can write his own ticket.

My son is getting a degree in Industrial Technology dealing with parts designing. I know next to nothing about the trades. Any info on job types/salaries or work environment would be greatly appreciated.
He’s intelligent and learns quickly. He was accepted into engineering at LSU and La Tech but chose this route instead.
