Vastly different circumstances.
BYU typically has some of the older teams because of the missions, whereas Kentucky has had some of the youngest.
That 2019-20 team was veteran heavy. He brought one transfer from Utah Valley back to BYU. But that roster was mostly assembled with Rose.

And?????? It is still WAAAAAY easier to recruit and build a program at school that doesnt have the strict student code restrictions that BYU does. The fact that Drew was able to take that situation and win an national championship proves MY point. My goodness...

You're harping on BYU's student code too much. They've had a solid athletic program across multiple conferences for decades in spite of that. Pope was decent there, but nothing remarkable for them.

Baylor was a black hole among major conference programs until Drew, Mulkey, and Briles got there. They actually did extraordinary things for Baylor, so I'm not sure your point was proven at all.

No, it definitely is not

Pope has been a fine HC.

Ed was miserably bad at Ole Miss

At his two stops, Utah valley and byu, he has never won more than 23 games in a season. He went 19-15 in his fourth year year at byu It’s a bizarre hire

The most bizarre part is paying him anything more than 1mill.

Agreed, paying him 5.5 million is the most head scratching thing about this ordeal

How "bizarre" is it that what you quoted is not true?

Brandon Davies Dismissed

What??? That tells me that it is a lot easier to win at Baylor than it is at BYU. Did Baylor win a national championship or not? Did BYU kick off their 2nd best player (Brandon Davies) when Jimmer Fredette was there or not? The best team they ever had was 27-2 when they had to dismiss their 2nd best player because he had sex with his girlfriend...id say their strict student code of conduct fricked up the best chance BYU has ever had. Show me ANY other school that kicks a player off their team...especially one that is 27-2...for having sex with their girlfriend. Don't worry...i'll wait!!

We appreciate everyone's concern and I look forward to personally bumping these threads when Daddy Kentucky is hoisting the SEC championship yet again.

I think having a coach at Kentucky that teaches X's and O's is going to be juuuuuust fine. Imagine a coach with all that talent that Cal had, that actually teaches basketball!! The school and history will sell itself in terms of Pope getting recruits, so Kentucky fans shouldn't worry about that. I have a feeling these posters will be changing their tune in the near future. In my own personal opinion, I think Kentucky is in a much better position long term than what they were with Cal.

Yep, it might get fun again to watch a team play both offense and defense.

Kentucky will still get some high level recruits, but if you don’t think Calipari was a huge part in why they were getting top 2 recruiting classes every year then I don’t know what to tell you. I think Pope is a good coach and the system he runs is fun and exciting. It just doesn’t lend itself to highlighting NBA traits like Calipari’s “system” did, and that trust will have to be built up with recruits. He could definitely be a successful coach there, but it might mean getting through a couple of down years for Kentucky.

It is somewhat similar to what Duke and UNC did, except those were internal promotions who had seen firsthand how to run a premier program.

Agree 100%. Cals issue wasn't recruiting, it was coaching. We now have a good x's and o's coach. The question will be recruiting. I am watching to see the staff he puts together.
I'm fine with getting 4* guys who stay 2-3 years over one and dones, that formula doesn't win anymore.

My hope for this year is he gets 3-5 guys from the current team to stay, maybe 2 recruits, and brings in 3-5 guys. Seems like his 2 best BYU players are coming. And he said he has been contacted already by other players, so we will see.

He’s one of the few guys that I think has a decent shot to get Sheppard to stay, even though he should go to the NBA since it’s a weak draft class this year. Kentucky fans just might have to get used to not having three top 10 recruits every year.

Pope will get better players than he did at BYU, and he led them to a six seed this year. I think Hall will be fine in the SEC, but I do worry about Khalifa. If he gets Jaxson Robinson to follow, that could be a guy who thrives.
