FWIW, I don’t think we’ve ever hired a first choice guy. Cal was the third guy we interviewed. Pitino was 3rd or 4th. Others interviewed during Tubby’s search.
The only guy who had NC game experience was Cal. Tubby had been to three Sweet 16s between Tulsa and Georgia. Pitino was an assistant under Hubie Brown at the Knicks when we hired him.

He was the Head Coach of the Knicks when Kentucky hired him. He was a NY assistant before going to Providence…who he quickly took to the Final Four
