Watching the video man...I don't know.
It looks like he easily could have walked away, there wasn't like 5 guys just all pummeling him on the ground. It was bizarre series of events from him.
A lot more questionable than the OP makes it seem imo

Erm, I’m pretty sure one guy pushing you into the water while another punches you in the face is plenty reason to fight for your life bro.
I agree he had a few opportunities to de-escalate (and clearly so did that merry band of idiots), but eating knuckle sandwiches with your head half-submerged isn’t one of them.

WTF? He should walk away from looking for something because some punk arse teenagers don't know how to behave? Its easy to monday morning QB, but I doubt the guy thought what happened was going to happen.
