It's not just Google. When you have IOT devices, I've seen a consistent problem in getting garage door openers, sprinkler controllers, etc., connected to a 2.4/5GhZ bonded network with a common SSID. The same happened to my Eufy scale and vac with both a Netgear and a TP-Link router.

Yes it's the common SSID that causes these problems. And no it's not just Google, but what I meant by "simplified" is Google and others have removed many options/features, such as the ability to assign multiple SSIDs and segregate the 2.4/5ghz bands.
