I think Clark is the type of player you just have to let her get hers because she's just going to
So not only did our scheme not work, it was far worse than how other teams fared with her (on average).
Once it became clear that our defensive approach to Clark wasn't working, it was malpractice to not change it up.
As I said in other posts, and as others have also posted, we could've doubled Clark and forced the other Iowa players to beat us. We could've aggressively attacked all ball screens (we waited until mid 4th quarter to do that). We could've played denial defense full court to keep her from getting the ball - or at least make her work a lot harder to get it. We could've trapped Clark immediately in the frontcourt to force her to give up the ball. Maybe she gets it back later in the possession, but it burns shot clock and makes her work. We could've tried different defenders on her - which we did a little but HVL was guarding Clark for FAR too long.
There were a lot of things we could've tried. Maybe none of it would've worked, but damn, it's win or go home. Try it all.

How many people stopped Pistol Pete when he was hot.Why
does everyone need to blame someone.Clark was outstanding
in that game no one would have stopped her.Accept it they
were the better team.KM and the team did what they could
and it wasnt good enough.

I thought the bad decision was not getting van lith the ball
She was wide open several times to hit 3s from the corner

(Fyi: she averaged 32 and 9 this year, so let her exceed her season averages by 28% and 33% respectively).
If we merely hold Clark to her season averages, we win.

She was injured early in the season and then had to play herself into shape. That's why she looked heavy and slow in February.
The main reason we lost was we could not buy a basket in the second half. Worse shooting performance by LSU women I can remember.

LSU should fire their 4 time national champion coach and hire you instead.

For LSU, Reese took 21 FG attempts (Mostly ALL Alligator-Armed, shoot from the hip Jesse James Crap she always does) and she had 8 FT, therefore, she had a higher percentage of FT to shots taken than Clark.
Clark % of FT to Shots 6/29 = 21%
Reese % of FT to Shots 8/21 = 38%
I agree with a lot of what you posted but this is not a clear indication of anything and a bad example to use. Reese is a paint scorer and part of he repertoire is drawing fouls from contact under the basket, and she is very good at it.
But, fouls are not what cost LSU this game. If you simply look at FGAs and FTAs the opportunity is there. LSU normally shoots FG% @ 46.7% with FTs @ 74.9%. In this game, they were FG% @ 38.6%, and FT% @ 64.7%. If they shoot enough better to split the difference they score 9 more points, they lost by 7. The 3rd quarter decided the game.

Another co-conspirator in the refs favor Clark conspiracy. Go back in history and see how many piss and moan about Larry Bird, Jordon and the rest of the greats. You people follow Facebook bullcrap way to much...she beat ya...PERIOD.

I went back and looked at Clark’s made 3s.
4 of her threes were on HVL (primary defender)
3 were on Poa (on far fewer possessions)
1 on Angel as a help defender
1 on a 2-on-1 transition where HVL covered the other player who broke free to the hole
11 misses
Of the four threes she hit on HVL, Hailey went over the screen on three of them, maintained tight coverage, and Clark hit a tough shot. Only once did Clark hit a 3 when Hailey just sagged and gave her too much space expecting a drive.
The bigger issue was that no one—not HVL, Poa, or the few Flau’jae attempts—could keep Clark from driving and you can’t double Clark 25 feet from the hole or you’re just begging her to get unlimited assists to the open teammate.
Long story short, the best coach in women’s basketball realized she had to swallow the poison pill and choose the best of multiple bad options. We shouldn’t crush HVL for drawing the short straw against a generational talent.

We re-watched the game last night. (Still exciting the second time). HVL hustled and ran the entire game. Iowa’s offense runs almost entirely through Clark. Our defensive plan looked a lot like HVL as our primary defensive worker. She did more than enough to put LSU in position to win. She contested everything without drawing fouls.
The above posters are correct. Cold shooting by the entire LSU squad in the third quarter lost the game.

Only 3 of Iowa's 37 opponents allowed Clark to scored more than we allowed.
And 16 of those opponents managed to hold Clark under 30 points.
HVL worked hard, no doubt, but she utterly failed. And a lot of that is on Mulkey, for devising that defensive scheme and not adjusting in-game when it was evident to everyone that it wasn't working.

Sometimes great players just get ridiculously hot. Go back and look at her 20 three point attempts. The D was good on most of her misses and arguably the defense was good on 6 of the makes.
Those are shots you have to live with as a coach because they’re supposed to be low %. “Make her shoot contested 25-footers” is probably the best percentage play.
It was like last year with Jasmine Carson but on steroids. They defended our stars and dared the bench to beat them…our bench just went nuts.

Well, essentially thats what they did. Guarded her to try to stop her from getting the ball. But Clark knows how to come off screens and is just too quick for that most of the time. In high school I was always assigned to the other teams best shooter, and usually did very well. Unless, the other team was very good in screens and the other player was as quick as I was. Then, it was what you see happened with Iowa.

And there is the problem. Our entire defense was HVL playing one-on-one with Clark, and Iowa using another player to set a screen on almost every possession. So basically a one person defense on Clark, made more difficult by Clark getting more help than HVL.
