re: If Brock Bowers or Rome Odunze are still on the board at 14, do you take one of them?

I wouldn’t consider it “settling” if we draft a OL or DL at #14. There will be an elite player available for us. A guy like Fautanu is not a ho-hum pick. He will be picked by Seattle if not us. That guy is legit. Could step in day one and be head and shoulders better than penning. The ONLY criticism I’ve heard about that guy is he might translate better as a guard. No one is saying he wouldn’t be a good tackle. He’s got some of the most proven experience in the draft at LT. He will absolutely suffice as a tackle for us but his production ceiling could be at guard. Ohh the horror!! We have an elite guard prospect in our back pocket. They say the same about the Oregon state guy and Latham at RT. All OL positions are just as if not more valuable than TEs. And we are in need of all OL positions.
My point was that if the OL is the best guy or in the same tier as everyone else available, they will go with OL
If they have a guy at another position in a higher tier, they will go with him.
In the past under Ireland and Loomis, they have "pods" of players lumped together that are of similar scores. At that point they look to other factors to decide who they pick.
if there is a guy in a higher pod available, they usually go with that player.

Why did you leave this out?
If we are dismissing TE value, then the value position we likely have to make a decision on at 14 is CB, b/c 1 of the 2 elite guys is almost assuredly going to fall to us. The 2 DIs at the top of the draft will likely be an option, but I'm not sure if they're a fit next to Bresee. We could theoretically have a killer 4-man pass rush but we could get destroyed by power running teams.
This doesn’t make sense either. We shouldn’t draft a first round d-lineman because he will negatively affect our rush defense? How does more talent on our d-line make us worse? So Verse can’t tackle a running back now?
I’ve really got nothing against the top two CBs. I’d prefer to build the trenches and I don’t see how they are in a better tier than the available linemen.
You also dismissed two of the elite linemen prospects simply because they may translate better to guard. Well if that is your only criticism what’s wrong with taking a guard in the early first round? Best player available right?Guards are paid more than TEs.
Just admit your head over heals in love with all the bowers hype and will say anything to make it make sense. Just say you want to buy his jersey. I can at least respect that. But quit with this BPA crap because Bowers hasn’t set himself apart from the other top end prospects.

Why I said if he's not an option I provided other options that aren't OL

If he's not a historic prospect (Quentin Nelson or Zach Martin, basically), then that's like taking a RB in the early 1st.

Quentin Nelson was a freak prospect who would never make it to #14 in any draft. Zach martin wasn’t a historic prospect. Drafted #16 ovr. Actually a good comp for fautanu

2 guys I would look at as a mid round receiver
Malik washington(virginia)
Jamari thrash(louisville)
This draft is so deep at receiver.
The saints have to come away with another receiver in this draft. Problem is they can't afford to use the 1st or 2nd on receiver.

Fatanu can probably play tackle or guard. Taking a guard at 14 isn't like taking a rb at 14.

It's not even a question. They have to build the trenches. Shepherd was a complete whiff in free agency. I thought he would be much better. Saunders was better than shepherd but not the long term answer.

For this team is. You need to be absolutely certain the guy you take at 14 is a tackle for the long haul

The Penning Era should've been over! But you can't teah 6'5 325 SOLID and athletic as hell. He could become an all pro G, maybe.... find a spot he's comfortable whether it's LG, RG or maybe even RT, best bet is probably at LG, but maybe he's better on the right side cause he's right handed, just figure it out before we take a HUGE L on that kid

WTF? How can the era be over if you’re going to try him out at different spots with the belief he has the potential to be all pro?

the implication being that all the good/great LT & LGs are left handed?

I want the penn state tackle. Could be a franchise tackle for years. I wouldn’t hate Bowers or odunze but I would hate to waste most of their rookie contract having Carr as their QB
Posted on 4/12/24 at 2:40 pm to Balsamic_duck
The real question with Bowers or Odunze is do you pass up on drafting George Kittle or Devante Adams to get a tackle? I think unless you are drafting the next Trent Williams, you absolutely take either of them if they fall to you and thank the football Gods for your good fortune.
Posted on 4/12/24 at 3:48 pm to saints5021
Well if you call them "Kittle & Adams" but don't call the tackle in question anything it does shade ones viewpoint doesn't it?
Posted on 4/12/24 at 5:24 pm to Weekend Warrior79
I'm saying idk wtf he's so bad, try him anywhere other than LT. The Penning LT Era should be over, I understand your point though, your woman won't stop coming to my house after you go to bed, that Era definitely ain't over

Bowers opted out of testing, unfortunately. But here’s some more juice for my Bowers’ stans

Yes. Bowers for sure. I'm usually against drafting a TE that high but he would be a game changer and our TE room is very weak imo.

Best OT available, full stop.
That is the approach a loser franchise would take, “full stop”.
Drafting for immediate need over a clearly better player available at different position only makes sense if you are a player or two away for a superbowl. Which the saints unfortunately are not. Now , they make take this approach; but it’s absolutley dumb.

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but 9 TEs drafted in the first round in the past 10 drafts, 0 have been all pro and only 1 has 1000 yard season.
Its so strange how often 1st round TEs bust.
