Serious question. How is hush money a crime?

We had sex but I’ll give you a couple of thousand not to say anything. How is that a crime? How does that have a negative impact on society?

If done with a NDA it probably isn’t, members of Congress ought to be squirming about this. Lots of settlements among people are done to keeps things quiet and Trumps was no different. What is a play here is a supposed campaign violation which is not criminal in this case .

I think it depends on how it’s paid and whether or not it’s paid to stay quiet about something illegal.

Didn’t they also try to tie it to the election somehow?

I just can believe that this many years later they are still trying this shite.

Depends on where the money comes from and how you classify it. If it is campaign funds, that would be the misuse of tax free campaign money for a personal expense. If it is business funds written off as a business expense, that would be a tax avoidance crime.

If one pays hush money with their own funds, it isn't a crime. The criminal aspect has everything to do with the tax laws or the campaign finance laws.

It isn't... but false claims of "muh campaign funds were used" would make it an ethical quandary.

Levin had a great point about this last night.

The very news agencies and courts that are going after Trump for an NDA have certainly used them themselves. There’s nothing illegal about an NDA, and it’s not “hush money.” It’s a legally binding agreement to not disclose information. M&As use them all the time.

The only issue might be the source of the funds, as mentioned.
