I think LSU learned from all the Will Wade and other drama to get out in front of the situation.
I don't know how much LSU could have gotten "in front" of the Will Wade situation. The statements caught on wiretap were part of a criminal investigation that didn't involve LSU. It was, I'm sure, a few minutes of several hours of conversations between Christian Dawkins and numerous people involved with college basketball. Including coaches. The statements from Wade, however, were largely irrelevant to the criminal investigation. Which is why Wade was never charged with anything. The FBI didn't even tell the NCAA they were recording coaches until the DOJ went public with the indictment of several coaches. It's not like the NCAA and FBI were working together. The NCAA had no idea.
The recordings of Wade only came to light (publicly) when Dawkins's defense attorneys obtained them in discovery. They then leaked them to the media. It in Sept of 2017 that the DOJ announced the arrest of several coaches. It's wasn't until March of 2019, 1.5 years later that the yahoo article involving Wade came out. And that was only right after the media got the recordings. Which the FBI didn't give them.
