re: Parenthood is just a series of colds and other assorted illnesses

Start using some kid’s zinc and smoothies with blueberries and other virus fighting agents, celery juice works miracles.
And yes, most parents don’t give af if their kid is sick, they are dumping them at school and daycare so they can have their own time for work or personal. Lots of selfish parents out there that don’t consider anyone else but themselves

Putting a kid in daycare at 6 weeks is wild to me.
I’m not an OT baller though

Good for their immune system.

I have raised 4 (24,21,18,13)
The older 3 spent some time in day care when they were really young. Illness from all that crap they get exposed to just becomes part of family life. I have ridden that carousel for 24 years. Way less frequent now as everyone in my family has traded that shite back and forth for so long that our immune systems just laugh at the common cold.

Yeah, all the sick shite is building up their immune system, and it definitely eventually gets much better. We had to pull our two year old out of daycare because he missed more than half the time at one point and we were just wasting money. But now he generally deals with sicknesses fairly easily these days.

Parenting in America 2024
What you said is mostly right until this, there is way more of a push for actual parenting with a stay at home parent in 2024 than there was in 1984, 1994, 2004, 2014, etc.

No. He will get all the stuff in Kindergarten.

As the kids get older, it is bigger problems. It will get better.

4th and 6th grade boys at our house and, knock on wood, we finally don't get the mild sicknesses anymore. A strep throat or fever every now and then, but not the walking petri dishes anymore.

These are the same parents that insist on going to work when they are sick themselves.

You have a choice, keep them out of daycare and they stay well when they're young, or put them in and build immune systems. Unfortunately I have a Junior athlete now who's dealing with a herniated disc and a dislocated kneecap. So no, it never ends. It just changes...

No but how your kids handles it gets better. My kids get a cold and they are just fine for school (and temprment is better as they deal with minor stuff)
When they were daycare age, it was brutal. They’d run a fever or whatever and it meant they’d be home for at least 3 days for the cold.

It happens just as much for people with traditional home lives. I guess unless you homeschool and keep kids in a bubble?

My 18 month old is an only child and has never been to daycare (babysitter comes every day to our house) and doesn’t stay constantly sick. However, she has has Covid twice… I’m in for a rough ride when kindergarten starts, huh?
Eh you never know. Mine didn’t start til 4 and no constant sicknesses to report.
I’m sure it helped having neighbors with a bunch of kids that were about the same age.

They are little germ factories until around 10 years old, it’s unavoidable. We’re grandparents and I’ve witnessed miraculous recoveries when Nana puts her chicken soup magic and loving care on the older ones who “don’t feel well” that day.
