It is not LSU. It is the Louisiana Legislature. Top notch students get much better financial packages from other states than they do from Louisiana. I have friends who have children who are exceptional students in Louisiana. They are being offered partial scholarships to LSU but they can go to any school in Alabama not only for free but with an expense stipend.

You're not the only one. Many kids go out of State on full academic scholarships.

A full scholarship to me means everything as in tuition, books, food, room, and all fees. You don’t come out of pocket for anything. There are very few of those. You might get 100% tuition, but you still have to pay $15-20K a year on living expenses.

Seems strange on the 36. Why would a kid with a 36 even go to LSU? Surely they could go to a good school (aka not another SEC school). Are you sure that was the score?

We are in state, oldest currently at LSU as a presidents alumni scholarship winner. Sadly LSU only offers roughly 20 full paid academic scholarships per year for 7000 freshmen. He had plenty of choices out of state however he gets a hefty refund every semester. And if gradual school is considered it’s conventional wisdom to go the cheaper route for undergrad.

My sister (no pics) went to LSU from in state and got paid to attend, as she went into a STEM field (and I do mean paid - she put away several thousand a semester of extra money into savings from scholarships, eventually using it as a down payment for a house). Point? You said your son wasn't getting attention, and that's the issue right there - he doesn't meet the DEI bar. Happy & proud for what my sis earned but the DEI scales are very, very real.

The financial package at Ivy League and other top tier private schools is based on household income. So a kid may get in but graduate with six figures of debt.

Best to go to another SEC school. LSU hammered my boys, we visited (twice), saw the clown show & said no thanks.

Most woke bs of all the schools we visited. Unless you like that.

We're not from LA though.

They all do this. Tell him not to take offense. He's probably getting blown up from out of state schools.

Higher Ed is a business.. education is lost in the whole thing these days. Out of state, just brings them more $$.

Why admit top minds that get full rides or money on top? When you can admit middle of the road students and they have to float the entire bill or OOS and it doubles.

Grand scheme of things?

I didn't force anything with either of them, aside from deterring one from going to UAB by herself.. LSU isn't in the top 3 in nursing programs, so they never were an option of one kid.

2 of the best EEs I know came from La Tech and UNO, so you can frick right off with thinking they are getting some sub par education because they're not at LSU. Plenty of professionals attend universities other than LSU and have successful careers.

LSU was just going to be the last option, not the first. Would you rather your child be in a class with 20 other students, or 50?

I don't need them to get a conservative experience, I don't want them around the likes of Robert Mann or his protégés, or other progressive bullshite at LSU.

Unless the kid has athletic skills, LSU would be on autopilot to acceptance. With that ACT score, TOPS pays for tuition, and another LSU automatic scholarship may kick in just on ACT scores alone. So not much marketing needs to be made, other schools will have to find ways to stand out knowing that LSU will always have that financial edge with TOPS and other school scholarships that kick in based on ACT scores.

TOPS only pays a little more than half of tuition

It's estimated by LSU to be around 35k per year for an in-state to live on campus at LSU with housing/meals/transport

TOPS at the highest level is good for about $7600 of that.

Tops makes them take it for granted.

Alabama recruits the hell out of LA kids. I know a few kids that got full rides to Bama, UGA, and auburn even though their parents are die hard LSU.

When LSU hired Marie as the Dean of Students and Jose as head of admissions , the focus switched from in state student to DEI out of state students. The grant and scholarship money followed. Neighboring SEC schools took advantage and began recruiting heavily, as well as offering competitive scholarships. All three of my kids received the President’s Scholarship at Alabama. None of them accepted it , but if they had they would have paid less out of pocket to attend Alabama than LSU. They all went LSU. Two graduated Summa Cum Laude and the third is still in school. LSU provided the education but has done little to nothing to assist them in anyway. Their priority is NOT retaining the best students of Louisiana. Their priority is NOT focusing on Louisiana students in general. But if you graduate high school in California, Arizona, or New Mexico they will waste all of the public money they have recruiting you and trying to help you graduate. The legislative auditor issued a report two years ago on this practice. The result is exactly what you thought it would be. Most of those kids don’t stay four years /graduate. LSU never recoups the money. Of the ones who graduate , very few remain in Louisiana so the state never realizes the benefit of the investment in education.

Even if he has no intention of attending LSU he should still apply, get accepted and get his TOPS award letter. That way, if he transfers back to LSU later he will still have TOPS. You never know what will happen.

I've worked with a few kids over the past few years with nearly perfect high school scores and grades. The best outcome, in my opinion, is for these students to attend the best school they can get into without going into debt. The sweet spot is getting a truly full ride with stipend at a top 30 school. These are often called Presedential or "named" scholarships. Research them.

The outcome of a student from a top 20-30 school isn't different than a top 10. However, the opportunities afforded to students at elite schools are typically much better than those at LSU.

I would advise your student to increase his scores, pursue one or two interesting extracurriculars, and show interest in the schools that make his list. Go visit them, get on their mailing lists, etc. People don't realize that colleges have software that tracks demonstrated interest.

Good luck to you and your student.
