No one has argued the bar is a fool proof way to cut morons out of the profession. It is a barrier for entry for people who cannot grasp the basic fundamentals of a number of basic practice areas. It is not asking you to master these areas - just enough to pass essay or multiple choice questions.

I always thought these types of professional exams should be in two parts.
Upon graduation, pass an exam that, as you say, is a barrier for entry. Upon passing this you get granted some sort of apprentice or provisional status.
At this level you can't practice on your own, you need to be supervised.
Then at some point, maybe it's 5 years down the road, maybe it's not a time table but whenever a candidate feels like they are ready, etc, they take a second, harder exam, and if they pass that, they get a full certificate status.
