Because it is generally thought that SC is #1 overall seed and LSU is #8. But those people don't know how the committee works. As mentioned in another post, they try avoid Elite 8 conference matchups when possible, especially when those 2 teams were the two best teams in that league.
Ironically, this became a thing a while back when Baylor and Texas A&M were the top 2 teams in the Big-12 and were seeded 1-2 in the same region. Mulkey was pissed
And I don't think the committee has done it again since then.

Teams that are top 4 seeds and from same conference are not allowed to be put in same region. Earliest would play against SC is Final Four.
