How long though does the West avoid that temptation? History shows the more you mobilize your forces, the greater the risk....see WWI.
Also, if you restrain long enough and the Russian industrial base starts to provide excess surplus with the advantage and makes a push towards Kyiv what happens? Do we cut aid to Ukraine, allow a possible expanded and newly envigorated Russia to place thousands of troops at the borders of Southern Poland and the Romanian frontier? The last thing the West wants is for the current Ukrainian government to collapse.
